For the first time it provides a completely noninvasive method for the treatment of renal and ureteral stones. The current range of its indications includes approximately 70 per cent of nonselected urinary stone patients. An additional 25 per cent of the patients with more complex stones in the upper urinary tract can receive treatment with the lithotriptor combined with endourological procedures. More recent additions to the range of clinical routine applications with the original lithotriptor have been its use on common bile duct stones combined with endosurgical or radiological manipulations. With a modified kidney lithotriptor gallstones have been treated successfully, which has led to the development of a multipurpose device for biliary and urinary stones. © 1989 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByBhojani N, Mandeville J, Hameed T, Soergel T, McAteer J, Williams J, Krambeck A and Lingeman J (2018) Lithotripter Outcomes in a Community Practice Setting: Comparison of an Electromagnetic and an Electrohydraulic LithotripterJournal of Urology, VOL. 193, NO. 3, (875-879), Online publication date: 1-Mar-2015.PERRY K, SMITH N, WEISER A, USER H, KUNDU S and NADLER R (2018) THE EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF SYNCHRONOUS BILATERAL EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK WAVE LITHOTRIPSYJournal of Urology, VOL. 164, NO. 3 Part 1, (644-647), Online publication date: 1-Sep-2000.MUGIYA S, NAGATA M, UN-NO T, TAKAYAMA T, SUZUKI K and FUJITA K (2018) ENDOSCOPIC MANAGEMENT OF IMPACTED URETERAL STONES USING A SMALL CALIBER URETEROSCOPE AND A LASER LITHOTRIPTORJournal of Urology, VOL. 164, NO. 2, (329-331), Online publication date: 1-Aug-2000.Parulkar B, Hopkins T, Wollin M, Howard P and Lal A (2018) RENAL COLIC DURING PREGNANCY: A CASE FOR CONSERVATIVE TREATMENTJournal of Urology, VOL. 159, NO. 2, (365-368), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1998.Paik M, Wainstein M, Spirnak J, Hampel N and Resnick M (2018) CURRENT INDICATIONS FOR OPEN STONE SURGERY IN THE TREATMENT OF RENAL AND URETERAL CALCULIJournal of Urology, VOL. 159, NO. 2, (374-379), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1998.Streem S (2018) Contemporary Clinical Practice of Shock Wave Lithotripsy: A Reevaluation of ContraindicationsJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 4, (1197-1203), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1997.Zhong P, Cocks F, Cioanta I and Preminger G (2018) CONTROLLED, FORCED COLLAPSE OF CAVITATION BUBBLES FOR IMPROVED STONE FRAGMENTATION DURING SHOCK WAVE LITHOTRIPSYJournal of Urology, VOL. 158, NO. 6, (2323-2328), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1997.Vasavada S, Streem S, Kottke-Marchant K and Novick A (2018) Pathological Effects of Extracorporeally Generated Shock Waves on Calcified Aortic Aneurysm TissueJournal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 1, (45-48), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1994.Mobley T, Myers D, Mck.
