Resumo

Children with failure to thrive are frequently investigated in hospital, but it is uncommon to find a convincing organic cause. Thirty-seven children admitted with this diagnosis to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children are discussed. In only seven cases was an organic cause found. The medical and social histories of these 37 children are reviewed. The profile of the child with non-organic failure to thrive is dominated by deprivation, both emotional and material. His parents are frequently socially inadequate and come from similar families themselves. This is a pattern which superficially looks like a genetically determined or inborn error, an inability to cope with society.
