Based on the long-term stability and functional requirements that have to be met by coating materials for gas turbine applications, classes of oxide compounds were identified that have high potential to be used as an alternative to conventional yttria-stabilized zirconia. Properties such as thermal expansion, heat conductivity, phase stability, sintering activity and thermocyclic behavior were examined and tailored to requirements by the selection of compound and microstructure.
