ResumoFifty cases of selective anterior cingulotomy (cingulo-tractotomy) are reviewed. The application of this psychosurgical procedure to patients suffering from severe chronic depressive illness is considered. Criteria for the selection of cases for the operation are discussed, and a plea is made for consideration of the operation as a potentially life-saving therapeutic measure.
