ResumoStudies over the past decade have shown that the keratinocyte contains a variety of immunomodulators (cytokines) and growth factors. Far from merely being a target for immune-mediated damage, it is now clear that the keratinocyte is chemically equipped to initiate and regulate local and systemic immunity. This article catalogues the cytokines and growth factors produced by the keratinocyte and describes their function in skin homeostasis and dermatopathology.
