ResumoDipyridamole was given in increasing doses up to a maximum dose of 400 mg per day to a group 30 patients with glomerulonephritis, who had stable prothrombin activity on a therapeutic dose of an oral anticoagulant — 28 patients received warfarin, two patients phenindione (Dindevan)— in an attempt to determine whether dipyridamole altered the prothrombin activity or anticoagulant control. No significant difference was found in the prothrombin times or daily anticoagulant doses following the addition of dipyridamole. In three patients with normal renal function, minor bleeding complications were observed within one month following the addition of dipyridamole. It is concluded that dipyridamole does not affect the prothrombin activity and is safe to use in a combination with oral anticoagulants. It is recommended that the prothrombin activity should be maintained at the upper end of the therapeutic range to avoid possible bleeding complications.
