The single ultrasound feature that correlated with subsequent renal function was the status of corticomedullary differentiation. The presence of corticomedullary junctions in at least 1 kidney in 17 infants was always associated with a serum creatinine level of 0.8mg./dl. or less in long-term followup. Of 11 patients with absent corticomedullary differentiation 7 had eventual creatinine levels of greater than 0.8mg./dl. with 5 of them suffering clinically significant renal insufficiency. An association between vesicoureteral reflux and absent corticomedullary junctions was also found. © 1992 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited BySarhan O, El-Ghoneimi A, Helmy T, Dawaba M, Ghali A and Ibrahiem E (2011) Posterior Urethral Valves: Multivariate Analysis of Factors Affecting the Final Renal OutcomeJournal of Urology, VOL. 185, NO. 6S, (2491-2496), Online publication date: 1-Jun-2011.Sarhan O, Zaccaria I, Macher M, Muller F, Vuillard E, Delezoide A, Sebag G, Oury J, Aigrain Y and El-Ghoneimi A (2018) Long-Term Outcome of Prenatally Detected Posterior Urethral Valves: Single Center Study of 65 Cases Managed by Primary Valve AblationJournal of Urology, VOL. 179, NO. 1, (307-313), Online publication date: 1-Jan-2008.WILLIAMS C, PÉREZ L and JOSEPH D (2018) ACCURACY OF RENAL-BLADDER ULTRASONOGRAPHY AS A SCREENING METHOD TO SUGGEST POSTERIOR URETHRAL VALVESJournal of Urology, VOL. 165, NO. 6 Part 2, (2245-2247), Online publication date: 1-Jun-2001.NOH P, COOPER C, WINKLER A, ZDERIC S, SNYDER H and CANNING D (2018) PROGNOSTIC FACTORS FOR LONG-TERM RENAL FUNCTION IN BOYS WITH THE PRUNE-BELLY SYNDROMEJournal of Urology, VOL. 162, NO. 4, (1399-1401), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1999.DUEL B, MOGBO K, BARTHOLD J and GONZALEZ R (2018) PROGNOSTIC VALUE OF INITIAL RENAL ULTRASOUND IN PATIENTS WITH POSTERIOR URETHRAL VALVESJournal of Urology, VOL. 160, NO. 3 Part 2, (1198-1200), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1998.Denes E, Barthold J and Gonzalez R (2018) Early Prognostic Value of Serum Creatinine Levels in Children With Posterior Urethral ValvesJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 4, (1441-1443), Online publication date: 1-Apr-1997.Kaefer M, Barnewolt C, Retik A and Peters C (2018) The Sonographic Diagnosis of Infravesical Obstruction in Children: Evaluation of Bladder Wall Thickness Indexed to Bladder FillingJournal of Urology, VOL. 157, NO. 3, (989-991), Online publication date: 1-Mar-1997.Kaefer M, Keating M, Adams M and Rink R (2018) Posterior Urethral Valves, Pressure Pop-offs and Bladder FunctionJournal of Urology, VOL. 154, NO. 2, (708-711), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1995.
