Resumo

This article reviews the use of laser lithotripsy in the management of biliary stones. The experimental data for stone fragmentation and effects on surrounding injury of biliary tissue for lasers of different wavelengths are examined. The effectiveness and safety of laser lithotripsy are discussed. The use of lasers in the clinical setting and the variety of access routes to the biliary tree through which they can be used are examined.
