Resumo

Privatization, now a worldwide phenomenon, is growing in its extent and impact. It is taking place in more than seventy countries around the world, a number that expands every year. The movement started in Britain, and most proponents of privatization still draw their inspiration and the bulk of their examples of success from that country. The following partial listing of public-sector bodies that have been privatized in Britain illustrates the extensive progress that has been made: Amersham International; British Rail Hotels; English Channel Ferry Service; British Petroleum; British Aerospace; Britoil; Cable & Wireless; Associated British Ports; Jaguar Cars; the National Freight Corporation; several shipyards; Hoverspeed; 1 million public-sector housing units; British Telecom; the Royal Ordnance Factories; the Gibraltar Dockyard; forests; land and buildings belonging to a variety of public-sector bodies; and the contracting out of various local-government and hospital ancillary services, such as the maintenance and cleaning of government buildings, the testing of trucks and public vehicles, laundry, cleaning and medical care in the armed services, and the rest rooms at Kings Cross railroad station.
