Resumo

The aid and appreciation of popular knowledge about the use of medicinal plants for health and its conscious use, become increasingly necessary due to the high cost of synthetic drugs.This research aimed to identify the species of medicinal plants most widely used by the school community at an Early Childhood Learning Center in Goiânia, Goiás and awareness according to the literature from the school community on use, benefits and toxicity of the medicinal plants used.To carry out this study, the following strategies were used: supplying questionnaires to the school community, data analysis and delivery of explanatory material, studying the toxic properties and forms of use of medicinal plants most widely practiced by the school community.The results obtained demonstrated the level of knowledge that the school community has on the use of medicinal plants, forms of use and adverse health effects.Of the participants in the survey, over 80% were female and reported use of medicinal plants often with their children, which also stressed their knowledge of medicinal plants that were acquired through family contact.With respect to medicinal plants, the most cited were Mentha x villosa (mint), Plectranthus barbatus (Indian coleus), Matricaria recutita (chamomile), Vernonia polyanthes (Ironweed), Melissa officinalis L (lemongrass).In the face of prevalent childhood diseases, the alternative use of medicinal plants by the children's mothers is an affordable and efficient option.Thus, revealing the importance of this study to inform and educate these parents who use medicinal plants.
