Resumo

As we assume the role of Editors of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, we feel both tremendous excitement and a profound sense of responsibility. During the past 32 years, this journal has enjoyed continuous growth and remarkable success, partly due to the immense progress made in vascular and endovascular surgery and to the outstanding publications submitted by authors from all corners of the world. Major credit should also go, however, to our Founding Editor, Dr Michael E. DeBakey, for his vision and to an extraordinary group who followed him as Editors of this distinguished publication: D. Emerick Szilagyi, Jesse E. Thompson, Calvin B. Ernst, James C. Stanley, K. Wayne Johnston, Robert B. Rutherford, Jack L. Cronenwett, James M. Seeger, Anton N. Sidawy, and Bruce A. Perler. Without their expertise, commitment, and scientific integrity, this journal would not be where it is today: the premier international academic journal in vascular surgery and endovascular interventions. Passing the torch requires two teams. Editors Anton N. Sidawy and Bruce A. Perler (Fig) passed a magnificent torch, built on the rich traditions of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and improved by innovation and transformation. They raised both the quality and number of published articles, introduced many special features, and made the Journal relevant to both academic and community-based vascular specialists, as well as to students and residents in training who are also the audience of the Journal. Most importantly, with unwavering focus on quality, they successfully established two new journals, the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders and the open access online journal, the Journal of Vascular Surgery–Cases, each of exceptionally high quality and the potential for significant growth. Each journal provides its own unique destination house for publications focusing on arterial disease, venous and lymphatic disorders, and case series–thus broadening the scope and reach in our specialties. The Journal of Vascular Surgery has an Impact Factor of 3.021 and ranks first among all vascular surgery journals in the world. It is in the top 9.7% by citation of the 4625 scientific peer-reviewed journals listed in the Science Citation Index. In 2015, the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, a joint publication of the Society for Vascular Surgery and the American Venous Forum, was fast-tracked for listing on MEDLINE and in 2016, all articles published since Volume 1, in 2013, have now been indexed and made available on PubMed, with an independent Impact Factor coming soon. These are great accomplishments for our new venous journal. To ensure a smooth transition, during the past several months, we, as incoming Editors, have worked closely with the outgoing Editors. In this collaboration, we saw evidence of true leadership and the reasons why the journals have achieved great success during their tenures. For passing the torch with a significant lead and for the inspiring leadership of Drs Sidawy and Perler, we express our most sincere gratitude. As with all new leaders, we will build on past successes, but we also plan to innovate and advance the journals even further, as we know our readership would expect. The new covers of the journals are the most visible evidence of our intentions to start a new era in the life of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Publications. The design of the cover of the three journals is nearly identical, other than the color (red for the Journal of Vascular Surgery, blue for Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, and red/blue for the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Cases and Innovative Techniques). Other changes that you will see are less obvious but important to maintain each journal's leadership role in arterial, venous, and lymphatic disease management. We plan to maximize the opportunities provided by electronic publishing–you will witness changes soon on our website, in the Journal of Vascular Surgery apps, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. The social media icons, displayed on the covers of our journals, are visible evidence of these changes. We also redesigned the table of contents of our printed journals for easier navigation, enabling our readers to find articles of interest rapidly. In addition, each clinical and basic research papers will have a short, three-line summary following the title, to succinctly describe the essence of the study. Members of the editorial board will contribute with a brief “Highlight”, which will be published with each of these articles. We sincerely hope these changes increase the ease and pleasure in reading each of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Publications, whether on your cell phone, tablet, computer, or in the print version. Our current Associate and Assistant Editors, Thomas L. Forbes, Thomas E. Brothers, Peter K. Henke, Richard P. Cambria, Lois A. Killewich, and Gregory L. Moneta, have graciously agreed to continue to serve our Journal in 2016, to maintain continuity. Dr Moneta will move to fulfill the new position of Associate Editor in the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, while Assistant Editor James W. Jones, after 15 years of dedicated service, will relinquish his position. Other important changes that we have recently made are to channel venous publications to the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders and to appoint only venous experts to the editorial board of the venous journal. Since the secret to winning is teamwork, there won't be success without involvement and input from our readers and authors from around the world–we need your feedback, advice, and suggestions. We will do everything possible to respond swiftly to your questions and comments, to reduce turnaround time of submitted articles, and to provide you with the latest and best articles on vascular surgery, endovascular procedures, translational research, and medical therapy, which should facilitate your practice and enable you to provide the best comprehensive vascular care. The Editors, Assistant and Associate Editors, and all members of the Editorial Board are committed to continue to raising the quality of our journals to the highest ranks of surgical and cardiovascular publications. To accomplish this, we greatly benefit from the ongoing support and expertise of Elizabeth P. Perill and our publisher, Elsevier. Our enthusiastic and hardworking staff of Journal of Vascular Surgery Publications is lead by an exceptional Managing Editor, Jessica McEwan, and her editorial team of Alexandria Sese and Tyler Cosgrove. Without their dedication, expertise, and assistance, we could not fulfill our mission. We are grateful to the Society for Vascular Surgery for the confidence bestowed on us and we look forward to carrying the torch to new heights, so that the journals remain the most relevant, read, and referenced vascular publications and maintain their leadership role as the premier international source of medical, endovascular and surgical care of vascular diseases.
