ResumoO Ateneu (1888), by Raul Pompéia, Chiquinho (1947), by Baltasar Lopes da Silva, and Manhã submersa (1954), by Vergílio Ferreira, despite the evident chronologic distance from the publishing of the former to that of the latter, are three examples of novels in which the formation of individuals, since childhood, is dramatized: whether in the conflict with a Brazilian boarding school during the reign of Peter II, whether in the account of lyceum times spent in colonial Cape Verde, whether in the confrontation with a Portuguese seminar of Salazar’s time, there is in all three, via the memorialistic narration of Sérgio, Francisco and Antonio, a similar reaction against totalitarian and imposing discourses, as well as its standardization of individuals and masking of social differences. In this regard, the present article discusses the similarities among the abovementioned works, from a historical-comparative analytical point of view.
