Resumo

A nematode survey was conducted during 2001/02 and 2002/03 throughout the cotton- producing region in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. One hundred and eighty-four soil samples were collected from cotton fields in Aral Moreira, Chapadao do Sul, Costa Rica, Deodapolis, Dois Irmaos do Buriti, Eldorado, Guia Lopes da Laguna, Itaquirai, Maracaju, Mundo Novo, Navirai, Nioaque, Pedro Gomes, Ponta Pork, Sao Gabriel do Oeste and Sidrolândia. Composite soil samples were composed of 10 soil cores, 0-20 cm to the Nematology Laboratory of Embrapa Agropecuaria Oeste, where nematodes were extracted, identified, and quantified. There was a high variability in nematode occurrence throughout different surveyed fields and regions. Root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) was present in 27.7% of the analyzed samples; reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) in 16.6%; and lesion nematode (Pratylenchus brachyurus) in 65.2%. Mixed populations were less frequent than the occurrence of isolated species. Meloidogyne incognita and Rotylenchulus reniformis occurred at population levels above the damage threshold in, respectively, 45.0 and 32.3% of the infested fields. In general, frequency of plant-parasitic nematodes was higher in samples from Central and South regions, where small farms are prevalent. In those regions, there was a higher number of samples above the damage threshold levels. Population densities of M incognita were related positively to sand and negatively to clay contents of soil samples.
