ResumoMeloidogyne spp. are important parasites of coffee plants. In coffee plantations in western Parana, Brazil, these nematodes cause yield losses and limit crop expansion. A survey was carried out in this region in order to identify the main Meloidogyne species associated with coffee plants. Coffee plantations localized in the counties of Alto Piquiri, Altonia, Anahy, Assis Chateaubriand, Braganey, Brasilândia do Sul, Corbelia, Francisco Alves, Iguatu, Iracema do Oeste, Jesuftas and Terra Roxa were studied. Females of Meloidogyne spp. were extracted from coffee plant roots and identified based on the perineal pattern and esterase phenotype. From 85 sampled areas, 36.5% were infested with Meloidogyne spp. and 63.5% showed no contamination. Meloidogyne spp. were only found in Altonia, Alto Piquiri, Francisco Alves and Terra Roxa. Both M. paranaensis and M. exigua were identified as the only parasites of coffee plants in this region. Populations of M. paranaensis were found in Altonia (33%), Alto Piquiri (33%) and Terra Roxa, (60%) whereas populations of M. exigua were identified in Altonia (45%) and Terra Roxa (40%). Meloidogyne incognita and M. javanica were found parasitising only weeds between lanes of coffee plants.
