ResumoThe Laboratory of Didactics of Chemistry (LaDQuim) has been used in the last three years as a nonformal space to develop specific leaning activities in Science Education.Handling with teaching, research and extension activities, the LaDQuim team has been working with both pre-service and in-service teachers and students of Rio de Janeiro public schools as well. Our main goal is to propose and to work with new methodologies to teach and to learn Science/Chemistry and the citizen formation of students permeates all activities, and we have elected the Science-Technology-Society-Environment (STSE) approach as our methodological choice. The present work aims to describe a workshop relating the importance of mineral exploration for Brazilian economy from the period of Portuguese colonization to nowadays with chemical themes such as fractional crystallization, aqueous solution conductivity and flame test. The students of five public schools took part on the activities and the results suggest that the proposed workshop is an excellent way to introduce and discuss chemical topics like atomic theory, chemical bonds and solubility with secondary students.
