ResumoIn light of the impasses that the post conflict reconstruction in the Sudan deals with, such as the planning of the upcoming elections and the instability in the region of Abyei, this article seeks to evaluate how the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) is being implemented and to analyze the activities performed by the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) in the areas of politics and public security. The method used was the critical reading of official documents (especially the ones from the United Nations), and of selected bibliography specialized in peacekeeping operations and post-conflict reconstruction. The official documents were of great importance for an understanding of the normative basis upon which the UNMIS works, whereas the bibliography specialized in the CPA and the news that report the current Sudanese situation provided an overview of the real implementation of the CPA and of the United Nations' involvement. It was possible to conclude that the implementation of the CPA faces a rather critical moment due to different factors, like the divergent interests pursued by the parties to the agreement, the lack of consensus over the status of north-south borders, and the delay in the preparation of the elections originally planned to be held in 2009.The role played by UNMIS must be more active so as to frame current challenges, especially in Abyei; otherwise this region's instability might extend to other parts of the country, and might undermine other aspects of the post-conflict reconstruction process.
