Adrenal to peripheral venous testosterone gradients were observed in all patients, indicating adrenal production of this hormone. No compensatory adrenal production of testosterone was noted during a 17-month period after orchiectomy. The data suggest that the human adrenal in castrates produces testosterone, which may explain why adrenal ablation can offer palliation in some patients with prostatic carcinoma. © 1977 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byHudson P, Hakky S and Lombardo M (2018) Testicular Androgens in Prostate Cancer Patients Treated with a Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone AgonistJournal of Urology, VOL. 151, NO. 5, (1281-1282), Online publication date: 1-May-1994.Dupont A, Gomez J, Cusan L, Koutsilieris M and Labrie F (2018) Response to Flutamide Withdrawal in Advanced Prostate Cancer in Progression Under Combination TherapyJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 3, (908-913), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1993.Smith J (2018) New Methods of Endocrine Management of Prostatic CancerJournal of Urology, VOL. 137, NO. 1, (1-10), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1987.Oesterling J, Epstein J and Walsh P (2018) The Inability of Adrenal Androgens to Stimulate the Adult Human Prostate: An Autopsy Evaluation of Men with Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism and PanhypopituitarismJournal of Urology, VOL. 136, NO. 5, (1030-1034), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1986.Worgul T, Santen R, Samojlik E, Veldhuis J, Lipton A, Harvey H, Drago J and Rohner T (2018) Clinical and Biochemical Effect of Aminoglutethimide in the Treatment of Advanced Prostatic CarcinomaJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 1, (51-55), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1983.
