Resumo

A great deal is being written these days about drug addiction, and new methods of treatment of the socioeconomic deprived addict are being pursued vigorously and watched with a great deal of interest by many. While there is no doubt that addicts comprise a serious sociological problem and every effort must be made to find a way to prevent and treat them, there is another aspect of drug addiction, which, on the whole, has not received as much attention as it deserves. This is the problem of those patients with no apparent psychopathic personality or socioeconomic disadvantaged situation who have become addicted through the prescription of drugs by physicians. In this class are addicts to barbiturates, amphetamines, occasionally morphine or its derivatives and, primarily and most importantly, meperidine (Demerol). A brief discussion of this aspect of addiction, its cause and management, may be helpful to physicians.
