A flashlamp-pumped Cr:GSAG laser has been demonstrated which produces ~20 mJ/pulse at a wavelength of 0.787 μm. While other lasers such as Cr:BeAl2O4 and Ti:Al2O3 provide tunable lasers in the near IR, they have limitations such as low effective stimulated emission cross section or short upper laser level lifetime. In an effort to overcome these limitations, another host for Cr was sought, Cr:GSGG appeared promising but was plagued with color center formation.
