The kleingrass biotype grown in Texas, Mexico, and to a large extent in South America is var. coloratum, while var. makarikariensis predominates in Australia and much of Africa. D. L. Lloyd reported the distribution of var. makarikariensis in South Africa and its taxonomy and agronomic utility in Australia. Numerous studies have demonstrated that kleingrass forage yield responds positively to nitrogen fertilization. The estimated annual kleingrass seed production in South Texas is 200,000 kg, with most being Verde. Sheep and goats grazing kleingrass in West Texas have experienced photosensitization. Blue panic is a perennial, rhizomatous grass that differs from kleingrass in that it may attain a height of 3 m, and is very stemmy with pronounced swollen nodes that produce aerial tillers.
