ResumoThe legal definition of time has been an unknown theme in Administration Law in Spain.Nevertheless, it is very important in our daily lives. This paper searches the origin and development of the legal establishment of a uniform and national (and international) timescale in Europe (Spain) and North America until today. Also it searches the most controversial question about legal time: the introduction of the summer time (or Daylight Saving Time). This measure, normally to promote energy conservation and enjoy lighter evenings, gives rise to a great number of laws, regulations, orders and parliamentary initiativer that establish (or tried to) the legal time. Tinally, to understand the future of the definition of legal time is to ask (and answer) two questions: What will be the role of the European Union in the establisnment of legal time of the member states? What is the actual reason to change the clock every spring and fall?
