ResumoThe development of the service industry has been remarkable. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in Japan, the tertiary industries accounted for 70 % of the GDP while the employment ratio and consumption expenditure ratio reached close to 70 %. Furthermore, the services in manufacturing sectors have progressed significantly and investments into such services make up over 6 % of the total amount of investments (Medium Enterprise Agency 2004). Figure 15.1 shows the revenue ratio of leading IT companies and how the revenue ratio of hardware has now been reduced to around 20 %. NEC has transferred 51 % of its PC business to China's Lenovo and even HITACHI is considering putting its disk sector for sale. Now, 80 % of the sales ratio of IT companies is made up of software and consulting, maintenance and data center operation services.
