Autores ResumoCarine Cnudde-Lecointre, Lord Charost, Bishop of Lille during the Great War. Alexis-Armand Charost becomes in 1913 the first bishop of Lille. The man gradually pierces through the bishop. Lord Charost is essentially sensitive to the position of the Church within French society, supported in that by moral and social values. This man of a conservative set of mind is also a man of honour and of duty. His task of bishop during World War I brings his principles face to face with the severe reality of the occupation. To the material difficulties inherent to the manage¬ ment of the occupied diocese are very rapidly added the necessary interventions toward the population, in particular to uphold the hope in Victory. The bishop embodies, for the populations of the Nord, the reconciliation between the French and their Church. This blend of faith, hope and patriotism explains how a whole population was able to endure for 4 years the burden of the war and its heavy toll of deaths and casualties.
