ResumoAbstract Works, mainly drawings, by the Swiss artist Henry Fuseli have continued to come to light since the publication of Gert Schifrs two-volume monograph, Johann Heinrich Fussli (1741–1825) over two decades ago. Two of these-a large, highly finished pen-and-wash drawing from the artist's Roman period (reappearing in 1983 and now in the Achenbach Foundation, San Francisco; figure 1)1 and its preparatory sketch (separated from the recently discovered HarrietJane Moore album and sold at d.uction in 1992; Louvre, Departement des Arts Graphiques, Paris; figure 2)2—bring to Fuseli's already eclectic ceuvre a new subject whose iconography is reinterpreted in a highly unconventional manner.
