ResumoThe definition of the chrysophytes has changed over time, especially after electron microscopic and molecular systematic techniques were applied. Historically, the group was classified based upon light microscopic observations that emphasized flagellar number, life forms, and other morphological features; these were summarized using three keystone publications. Electron microscopic observations caused taxonomic revisions, especially at the class level, and as groups were removed from the Chrysophyceae sensu stricto , a number of new classes were formed. Molecular phylogenetic analysis brought to question the separation of the class Synurophyceae and the classification of the Chrysophyceae based upon morphology. This chapter provides more critical examination of some taxa examined previously, and it analyses new SSU rRNA and rbc L gene sequences that provide greater taxon sampling. The separation of the two classes was weakly supported in a combined gene analysis,
