Resumo

There is no assembled transcript of the papers delivered at the 1898-1902 meetings, but beginning in 1903 the AGA bound these as the Transactions of the American Gastro-Enterological Association. For reasons best known to librarians, the first (1903) volume is called Volume 6.Only a single copy of each of the first two volumes (Vol.6-7) is known to survive (Countway Library, Boston). In those years, the Transactions were merely bound reprints of those papers presented at the meeting which had been submitted to and published by other contemporary medical journals, and to these a frontispiece and membership roster was added, so these early articles were routinely doubly published.Meltzer's second Presidential Address can be found in Medical News (87:161-163, 1905), in addition to Vol. 7 of the Transactions.Today's young investigators may be aware that in Meltzer's time, at least in New York, medical investigators had to support themselves through private practice.Meltzer was a general practitioner in New York from 1893 until 1906 when he became a department head at The Rockefeller Institute.Burrill Crohn recalls that Meltzer, his family'S physician, delivered him into the world. When one of Crohn's 10 siblings would become sick, it was Burrill's task to ride the trolley car from the Crohn household on 82nd Street in Manhattan to Meltzer's office on 122nd Street to leave word that a house call was needed. Some time later, Dr. Meltzer's barouche drawn by a single horse would arrive with Dr. Meltzer, as Crohn says, "A big portly-set man with a German accent-typical countenance of a Bismarck-but underneath it, gentle and kind, and very devoj~d to our family."Crohn further recalls that at the bottom of the buggy there was a cage filled with experimental rabbits, which Meltzer would observe while making his long drives between house calls.'
