Resumo

A conspicuous cry Of the noctule bat Nyctalus noctula (Schreber) (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in the mating season. - Social calls of Nyctalus noctula were recorded at two sites in the southern and northern alps of Switzerland. They were emitted by a bat sitting in a tree roost in late summer. The calls were 30 to 60 ms long and covered a frequency range from 13 to 11 kHz at the southern site and 16 to 14 kHz at the northern site. The intervals between the calls followed a bimodal distribution at the site in southern Switzerland with a first mode at 160 ms and a second mode at 1790 ms. At the northern site the distribution of intervals showed a single mode at 1420 ms. The calls are thought to promote the attraction of females which are ready for mating. They may also deter other sexually active males.
