ResumoHistory of the development of the polarographic method from the birth of Professor Jaroslav Heyrovský in 1890 until the Nobel Prize award in 1959 is described. Background of the Nobel Laureate's family and education is given. Factors contributing to the discovery and development of the method are discussed. Polarography is unique among modern analytical methods, as its development is strongly centered around a single personality - J. Heyrovský - and as the timing of experiments leading to its discovery can be narrowed to a single day, February 10, 1922.
