Resumo

The area object of this study is located in Viamao, a city in Rio Grande do Sul State (30°16'15S and 51°02'54), approximately 50 km from Porto Alegre. The maximum altitude of the area is 136 m. Primary productivity studies were developed through the evaluation ofthe litter production, CO 2 production by the soil and by the decomposition ofpure cellulose. The average annual production, in nine years, was 10430.85 kg/ha/year. The results of the CO 2 production by the soil were an average of 2271.50 kg/ha/year and 6090.50 kg/ha/year, for the day and night periods. The decomposition rates of pure cellulose were 0.51%, 0.47% and 0.46% for the depth of 5, 10 and 20 cm, respectively, and 0.49%, 0.41%, 0.46% and 0.56% for summer, autumn, winter and spring. The cellulose decomposition in relation to depth as well to seasons were, in average 0.48% in 90 days.
