Properties of silicon and of a p-n junction, fundamental for the description of the operating principles of these detectors, are presented. A detailed discussion of physical processes in silicon, leading to the formation of the signal follows the introduction. Spatial resolution is discussed in relation to detector geometry. Recent developments of detectors with integrated coupling capacitors and detectors with double-sided readout and double metal layers for use in colliding beams experiments is presented. Lastly an example of the use of silicon microstrip detectors for vertex detection in the Delphi experiment at LEP is described.
