Resumo

Gideon Mantell has too often been remembered only for a myth about his wife's finding the first tooth of Iguanodon. In actuality, he deliberately pursued that dinosaur and others, of which he was also the discoverer, for more than thirty years. Our awareness that an age of reptiles preceded the age of mammals derives from him and earlier work by Cuvier. In addition to six dinosaurs, Mantell also discovered the tropical, fresh-water origin of the Wealden formation, together with dozens of new plant and animal species and numerous interpretative refinements. Both the range and quality of his work deserve to be better known.
