Resumo: Este artigo procura refletir sobre os fins da educação nas sociedades unidimensionais a partir das considerações de Herbert Marcuse e Neil Postman. A base de nossa argumentação é a contraposição entre o conceito e a finalidade da educação engendrados na Grécia Antiga, que vinham orientando, ora mais, ora um pouco menos, os rumos do mundo ocidental; e, por outro lado, abordamos a nova perspectiva que a educação adquire em uma realidade social unidimensional, comandada por uma racionalidade tecnológica intransigente em relação a qualquer modo de pensar alternativo que não a ratifique.Palavras-chave: Educação; escola; sociedade unidimensional; Herbert Marcuse; Neil Postman.Abstract: This paper intent to reflect about de ends of education in one-dimensional societies from considerations of Herbert Marcuse and Niel Postman. The basis of our argumentation is the contraposition between the concept and the finality of education engendered in Ancient Greek, that had been guiding, sometimes more, sometimes a little less, the directions of the occidental world; and, on the other hand, we approach the new perspective which education acquire in a one-dimensional social reality, commanded by intransigent technological racionality in relation a any mode of alternative thinking which do not ratify itself.Key-words: Education; school; one-dimensional society; Herbert Marcuse; Neil Postman.
