The article aims to explore, in an analytical way, the reception of the modernist writer Plinio Salgado’s first book, O Estrangeiro [ The Stranger ], which was published in 1926 and had known a huge success at the time. By recurring to the comments and critiques published in the same year, I intend to show not only the accolades made, and the problems pointed out by the critics, but also to underscore some issues which arose from the evaluations. Thus, I demonstrate that this book’s reception brings out aspects that are not limited to the literary dimension, for they also refer to a broader intellectual context and Plinio Salgado’s social networks.
