ResumoAstronomers cannot use visible radiation to look at the centre of our Milky way galaxy as only one visible photon in 1012 can pierce the murky interstellar medium that lies between the Earth and the galactic centre. Therefore astronomers have been forced over to the near-infrared to study the curious collection of luminous objects in the central parasec (≈13.2 light years) of the Milky way. At a wavelength of 2μm, for example, the Rayleigh scattering cross-section of the intervening dust grains is considerably reduced, and as much as 10% of the radiation from the galactic nucleus can reach us.
