ResumoAttempts were carried out in order to determine the ability of the aphid Aphis illinoisensis to transmit Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) and its transmission efficiency in comparison with the Myzus persicae. A. illinoisensis and M. persicae, were starved for 2 hours and then, given a acquisition access period of 15 min. on the zucchini squash 'Caserta' infected with WMV. After such time, 5 aphids were put on seedlings of the zucchini squash 'Caserta' and given a inoculation access period of 24 hours. The experiment was replicated four times, using 20 to 40 plants. The rate of transmission was considered to be similar between the two species with 39,0% for A. illinoisensis, and 44.9% for M. persicae. A. illinoisensis might have an epidemiological importance for the dissemination of the WMV in some Brazilian regions which warm climate and vineyards near cucurbitaceous crops.
