espanolLa investigacion en ciencia de materiales ha sido declarada prioridad nacional constituyendo uno de los programas de la convocatoria de 1988-91 del Plan Nacional de I&D. Este estudio trata de detectar los cambios que han ocurrido en la comunidad cientifica espanola como una respuesta a la financiacion, utilizando indicadores bibliometricos. La base del estudio son las publicaciones de los cientificos dedicados a la investigacion sobre materiales y que se encuentran en el Science Citation Index, en los anos 1985/86 (antes de la financiacion) y en 1989/90 (despues de la financiacion). Como fiiente bibliografica espanola se ha utilizado el indice Espanol en Ciencia y Tecnologia. El conjunto de indicadores empleados arrojan los resultados siguientes: La produccion cientifica espanola en el SCI aumento en 42%. La mayor cohesion cientifica se hace evidente por el aumento del indice de coautoria y de numero de Instituciones colaborando entre si. La mayor integracion en la comunidad internacional se manifiesta en el mayor numero de colaboraciones con Instituciones extranjeras. El nivel de caU-dad de las revistas de publicacion de los autores espanoles corresponde al de sus pares extranjeros. No se ha observado cambio hacia una investigacion de caracter mas tecnologico. Las revistas espanolas canalizan la investigacion mas cercana a los sectores industriales espanoles. EnglishNew material Research in Spain. A political priority. Materials science research has been declared as a priority by the Spanish National Plan for Scientific Research and Tecnhnological Development. The study tries to detect signs of change in the Spanish scientific community before and after the financing of the National Programme, by using bibliometric indicators. Thus, the publications by the Spanish scientists involved in materials research covered by the Science Citation Index in 1989/90 were compared with the ones produced in 1985/86 by the same scientists. Spanish publications were followed using thye Indice Espanol de Ciencia y Tecnologia. The results of the analysis point out to the increase by 42% of the Spanish production. The increase of the co-authorship index and of the cooperation among Institutions points out to a stronger cohesion in the scientific community. The growth of articles with foreign authors indicates the bigger integration in the international community. Spanish authors attain the same quality publications levels than their foreign coUeagaes. No change was detected towards a more technological research. Publications in Spanish journals seem to act as interfaces between the research and the industrial sectors.
