Resumo

The discussions on sustainable consumption in Brazil, still shows a newness about the actual understanding of what is to be the theme. Authors such as Gomes (2006), Panarotto (2008), among others, commented that sustainable consumption is targeted directly to individual actions with a conscious consumer, unlike the sense that authors like Michaelis (2000; 2003); Jackson (2007), Portilho (2005), among others, there is the influence of some stakeholders. Finally, it is still little consensus on the definition of checked construct. It is noticed also some confusion in the use of terms such as green consumption and conscious consumption to refer to the subject. In this sense, the objective of this study is to understand what has to be sustainable consumption, assuming that it is not related to the idea of building niche market or a consumer concerned about the nuances of it but, understanding that to allow for a sustainable consumption, sustainable development must be present as background and reference guide its existence. His understanding is subject to the understanding of sustainable development and especially the identification of which social actors can be part of the movement oriented at effecting this new development paradigm.
