ResumoLow in global agricultural productivity, are largely caused by water deficits. Evaluate the period in which the dry season, is an important factor in the impact on crops is mitigated, and one of the water monitoring in the soil forms is the estimation of the water balance (BHC). The huge lack of studies on climatic parameters for the municipality of Chapadinha - MA hampers agricultural activities in the municipality. The aim of this paper is to present the climatic water balance and classification climate for the municipality of Chapadinha - MA. This study used a number of historical data between the years 1976 (the beginning of the meteorological station operations in the city) to 2015, the average monthly rainfall and temperature, and omitted data deleted. For the calculation of climatic water balance was adopted the value of 100 mm for the available water capacity (CAD). Climate classification was made through the values of the water index (Ih), aridity index (Ia) and moisture content (Iu). The actual evapotranspiration reached 1078.62 mm and there was an annual water deficit of 723.8 mm, showing a great variability, to be distributed in its entirety over the period covering the dry season in the region (June to december), indicating the need for irrigation at that time.
