Resumo

A survey on plant species used in medical care in the town of Dom Pedro de Alcântara, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil was carried out. The samples came from two different groups: urban women (sample 1) and rural women (sample 2). The species surveyed were identified and information on they family range with the largest number of representatives was presented. Ecological data (habit, habitat and degree of domestication) as well as the species' origin are also included. As a result, 129 species were identified. They belong to 110 genera and 50 families. Asteraceae (18 species) and Lamiaceae (14 species) were found to be the families with the largest number of representatives. Out ofthis total, 51.2% were introduced from other continents, 39.4% are native of Rio Grande do Sul State and 9.4% are species from American origin and cultivated within Dom Pedro de Alcântara county. Plants with herbal habit found in backyards are predominant. So they are domesticated.
