ResumoIn November 1997 a replica of the bust of Patrick Blackett by the sculptor Jacob Epstein was unveiled at Imperial College, London, to mark the centenary of his birth. His protégé, Sir Bernard Lovell, the radio astronomer, places Blackett among the greatest physicists of the century and regards him as unique in being great in three subjects: nuclear physics, cosmic rays and rock magnetism. When Epstein originally approached his subject, his thoughts probably echoed those of the woman at Cambridge in the early 1920s who said: "No doubt he is a very good physicist, but it is his statuesque beauty that I like".
