Resumo

New records are listed for several continental species of free-living cyclopoid and harpacticoid copepods (Crustacea) from Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia. Diacyclops hispidus n. sp. and Nitocra lacustris colombianus n. ssp. are described from Colombia. The setation formula of Elaphoidella suarezi is corrected. Although the number of collections and reports on the small metazoan freshwater fauna of Latin America has increased in recent years, the distribution and ecology even of many common species remain poorly understood. Therefore, recording the results of collections, especially from non-lacustrine habitats not usually investigated, is still worthwhile. I report new records and new taxa of cyclopoid and harpacticoid copepods represented in collections from small bodies of water in Guatemala, Colombia, and Mexico. The Guatemalan and Colombian copepods were consigned to me for identification by Dr. Gerald G. Marten; Dr. Marten collected the Guatemalan specimens and Dr. Marco F. Suarez collected the Colombian material. A group of samples, of which five contained copepods, from a small area in Mexico was found in the Mildred S. Wilson Copepod Collection among the holdings of the Division of Crustacea, Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History. The collector of these samples could not be determined. Perhaps the samples never were examined by Dr. Wilson; they are not mentioned in her review (1975) of North American records of Elaphoidella bidens coronata (Sars, 1904), one of the species represented in the samples. Sample numbers given are those assigned by the collectors. Part of the Guatemalan and Colombian material has been deposited at the National Museum of Natural History, and part remains in Dr. Marten's personal collection. Specimens were examined in glycerine or in commercial polyvinyl lactophenol medium with chlorazol black E added, and drawn at 400 x or 600 x with the aid of a camera lucida on a Wild M20 compound microscope. Structural details were confirmed using an Olympus BH-2 microscope adjusted for phase-contrast interference at 400 x. Drawings are composites of several specimens. 'I thank Dr. Gerald G. Marten, East-West Environment and Policy Institute, East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Dr. Marco F. Suarez, Servicio Nacional de Erradicaci6n de la Malaria, Ministerio de Salud, Bogota, for loan and gift of specimens. Dr. Carlos E. F. da Rocha, University of Sao Paulo, identified the specimens of Apocyclops panamensis. Dr. Thomas E. Bowman, Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History, kindly permitted me the use of the Olympus microscope in his laboratory.
