ResumoIrregularly flooded salt marshes extend over 70 km2 along the Patos lagoon estuary margins (south of , Brazil), where the Spartina densiflora Brong. grass is one of the dominant emergent macrophytes. Sazonal variation of aerial biomass and annual net aerial primary production (NAPP) of this plant and associated species were quantified between April 1994 and June 1995 through monthly destructive sampling of dead and live aerial biomass. Annual NAPP estimates were obtained by through the calculation methods of Smalley and IBP. S. densiflora showed single peaks of dead (1,715.6 ± 114.4 g Dry Weight m-²; gDW m-²) and live (1,580 ± 134 gDW m-²) aerial biomass, and a marked seasonal variation. Eleven associated species contributed only with 1.2% for the annual NAPP of S. densiflora dominated salt marsh (2,391.1 gDW m-2 year-1).
