ResumoWith the second-generation sequential M gearbox (SMG II with Drivelogic), BMW M continues its long tradition of supplying cars with automated gearboxes. When combined with the new high-revving, naturally aspirated engine, the M3 model acquires an exclusive high-performance powertrain concept with two advantages that together achieve a hitherto unmatched standard of perfection: transmission technology as used on the BMW Williams Formula 1 racing car and the demands of day-to-day road driving. Part 1 of this article describes the SMG II components and control systems, while Part 2 deals with Drivelogic and special functions.
