Resumo

In July of 2016, we had the privilege of assuming the role of Editors of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. We both understood the magnitude of the task as well as the obligation of this honor. Retired editors Sidawy and Perler warned us that the work was both arduous and relentless but also overwhelmingly rewarding. We soon learned that they were right on target. But, what surprised us most was the unexpected and generous support we received from our reviewers, board members, assistant and associate editors, and our editorial staff. Success comes with teamwork and this Journal has teamwork as a tradition. Armed with our expert team's tremendous backing and enthusiasm, it was easier to transform the face and format of the Journal and introduce new features a short time frame. We both knew, however, that the journey to improve is long, challenging and never-ending. But this, as Winston Churchill once said, “only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.” As Editors of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, we have been traveling on the shoulders of giants. This month will mark the 33rd year of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the official journal of the Society for Vascular Surgery. It has been edited by some of the greatest vascular surgeons, starting with Michael E. DeBakey and followed by Emerick D. Szilagyi, James C. Stanley, Robert B. Rutherford, and Jack L. Cronenwett, to mention a few. The tireless work of all previous editors resulted in a premier academic publication, and the Journal was passed to us by Drs Sidawy and Perler with an impact factor of 3.454, ranked No. 1 among vascular and endovascular surgery journals and No. 21 among all surgical journals, in spite of the relatively small size of our specialty. Based on an h5 index of 82, Google Scholar lists the Journal of Vascular Surgery as the second best among surgical journals, with only the Annals of Surgery ranked above us. Preserving and increasing the high quality and integrity of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Publications has been our prime mission. The changes that we introduced in our first month, July 2016, received a warm welcome. We redesigned the cover of all three Vascular Surgery Journals– the red color now dominates the arterial Journal of Vascular Surgery, the blue color dominates the venous and lymphatic Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, and the cover of the open access, on-line only publication, the Journal of Vascular Surgery Cases and Innovative Techniques, has a mixed red/blue color, reflecting the content of this journal. There is now a concise summary inserted into the Table of Contents for each clinical and basic research article in the printed journals, and we have added a “highlights” section to each paper, written by an editorial board member, which explains why the paper was selected, how it contributes to the literature, as well as the level of evidence in the paper. In addition, we have produced an Editors' review video of selected papers in each issue, which can be viewed on the JVS website and the JVS App. The Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders, our second printed and online journal, which is a joint publication by the Society for Vascular Surgery and the American Venous Forum, was established 4 years ago. In 2016, it received its first impact factor (0.882) and is now listed in Medline. This quarterly peer-reviewed publication will be published bimonthly starting January 2017, and we plan to increase the number of pages in each issue and expand its content, as well as the quality, to a level and impact factor comparable with JVS. As Editors of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Publications, in the first 6 months of our tenure, we thank our readers for their confidence and comments. We are always ready to respond to observations and pursue change, when needed. We are grateful to our editors and reviewers who completed their tenure this month, often after many years of service, for their insights and hard work; without them, the Journal of Vascular Surgery would not be ranked at its current level. We also welcome those new editors, Editorial Board members, and reviewers who will join us in 2017 and will help us produce an even better-quality journal next year. We also thank our dedicated staff, Jessica McEwan, Alexandria Sese, and Tyler Cosgrove, for their expert help, as well as Elizabeth Perill and our Publisher, Elsevier, for their continuous support in producing our state-of-the-art publications. As we continue our joyful, glorious, but frequently challenging, journey as Editors of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Publications, we would like to assure you we remain dedicated to teamwork and to further improving the quality of the JVS publications. We wish you and your families a happy holiday season, and a healthy and prosperous New Year in 2017. The quality and integrity of scientific journals is based on a well-designed peer-review process: qualified peers, who are recognized experts in their relevant field, review and critique scientific articles and recommend publication, revision, or rejection. Constructive criticism by expert reviewers is essential to improve the quality of the submitted manuscripts, a process that will ultimately increase the quality and impact of the journal. Astute reviewers call attention to research not cited in a manuscript and point out mistakes made in the study design, analysis, or interpretation of scientific data. The Journal of Vascular Surgery has been blessed with excellent reviewers and in 2016, over 400 scientists and clinicians participated in peer-review process. The Editors are grateful for their important contributions during the past year to our journal, as well as the authors and to the scientific community. We would like to thank our Associate Editors for their contributions during the past year. Drs Thomas Brothers and Thomas L. Forbes served as Clinical Studies Editors of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and Dr Peter K. Henke as the Basic Science Editor. Their efforts to conduct efficient, impartial, and timely peer-review processes have been essential to the success of the Journal. After 5 years of outstanding service to the Journal, Thomas Brothers will complete his assignment and the Editors express their gratitude for a job so well done. The new Associate Editor for clinical studies, Dr Fred A. Weaver, will join our Board in 2017. Welcome Dr Weaver. Thomas L. Forbes will continue his role as Clinical Studies Associate Editor for the Journal of Vascular Surgery, while Peter K. Henke will continue his excellent contributions as Basic Science Editor for all of the Journal of Vascular Surgery Publications. Dr Gregory L. Moneta served in two capacities in 2016, as Associate Editor of our venous and lymphatic journal and Assistant Editor for abstracts for the Journal of Vascular Surgery. In 2017, we welcome him as Clinical Studies Editor of the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders. Another Associate Editor for Reviews of the Venous Journal will join our Board, Dr Cynthia K. Shortell, as a representative of the American Venous Forum. We are grateful for the 4-year excellent service of Dr Lois A. Killewich, who worked as Special Features Editor of the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders; she played a key role in establishing this important Venous Journal and she will remain on its Editorial Board. Dr Michael C. Dalsing will assume the role of Abstract and Book Review Editor for all JVS publications. In 2017, we will hire two additional editors. After 8 years of excellent service, Dr Richard P. Cambria will leave his post as Assistant Editor of Reviews. Society for Vascular Surgery president Dr Ronald M. Fairman will take over this challenging and important position. In 2017, Dr Paul J. DiMuzio will join us as the new Editor for Social Media and Press Releases. We received tremendous help from members of our Editorial Board, who provide frequent and expert reviews. Editorial Board Members in 2017 will have an additional task, as they will write a brief highlight for each accepted paper that will be published with the article. Board Members will frequently contribute with commentaries and editorials in the future as well. Members of the Editorial Board perform an average of 20 reviews each year and during 2016, this accounted for 28% of all the reviews performed. The Editors would like to recognize the important contributions of the following Editorial Board members who, after many years of valuable service, will be retiring from the Board this month. We would like to welcome all new members of the Editorial Board, who will start their assignments in January of 2017. Ali F. AbuRahma Christopher J. Abularrage Zachary M. Arthurs Ruth L. We would like to express our gratitude to them and looking forward to working with them and many more new reviewers in 2017. Cherrie Zack Abraham James B.
