Resumo

The annual Passages Editorial provides me with the opportunity to reflect on changes and transitions, as well as on developments and innovations that impact both the Journal of Comparative Neurology (JCN) and the field of neuroscience. In 2016, we focused our editorial efforts on Special Issues and commissioned papers covering emerging and hot topics in the field. In 2017, our mission continues to be to publish top-quality contributions that help shape the field of neuroscience. In 2016, we published two Special Issues containing papers presented at international conferences that were supported in part by JCN and its publisher, John Wiley & Sons. Issue 3, Volume 524 is a collection of papers based on presentations from Cortical Evolution 2015, a meeting that took place in Toledo, Spain. Edited by Verónica Martínez-Cerdeño (University of California, Davis), the issue presents 15 original research and review articles focusing on cortical evolution. Issue 8, Volume 524 is comprised of 18 contributions from a meeting on “Circuits for Positive Emotions” organized by Marco Celio from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and Gert Holstege, a JCN Associate Editor. In the year ahead, we are continuing our initiative to enhance the visibility of JCN and highlight important topics through Special Issues. We currently have two Special Issues in preparation that will appear in 2017. One is focused on the structure and function of the vertebrate retina under the leadership of Andrew Huberman (Stanford University), who is a member of the JCN Editorial Board. The other represents the interests of the Claustrum Research Society and will contain a series of papers on the anatomy, connectivity, evolution, and possible functions of the claustrum; it is organized by David Reser from Monash University, Australia, and Joan Baizer from the University at Buffalo. Looking forward to 2018, two special issues are in the planning phase, and further details will be announced in due course. As always, we are very grateful to the contributors and Guest Editors of these Special Issues for their time and efforts, and we encourage all readers to sign-up for e-Content alerts via the journal's homepage on Wiley Online Library to ensure they do not miss out on the latest Special Issues from JCN. In addition to high-quality Special Issues, to pursue the journal's mission of providing the neuroscience community with up-to-date and rigorous scientific developments, the journal is supporting scholarly topical Reviews, which are usually commissioned by the Editors, and Toolbox papers, which report new technologies and methodological breakthroughs, while keeping focus on the brain's functional anatomy and constraining the technical aspects in a relevant neurobiological question. In 2016, we had the opportunity to publish the Allen Human Brain Reference Atlas as a special issue of the Journal (Ding, S.-L., et al. (2016) Comprehensive cellular-resolution atlas of the adult human brain. J. Comp. Neurol. 524(16):3127–3481. DOI: 10.1002/cne.24080). This technical tour-de-force represents a major departure from the classical atlases in its innovative publication format. It is the only brain atlas to date to combine the rigor of a peer-reviewed scientific research paper with a presentation as a book format that includes the full set of annotated plates, open-access online availability of the resource with the ability to navigate and explore the details of any given area, and have programmatic access to the underlying data. The publication of this remarkable achievement in JCN reflects the continued involvement of the journal in promoting outstanding methodologies and technological novelty in the study of the functional anatomy and pathology of the human nervous system. In 2016, we took steps to improve the quality and access to information on the journal's homepage (wileyonlinelibrary.com/jcn). These efforts to improve the look and feel of the journal continue into 2017, with the implementation of a new article design aimed at improving the legibility and design quality, while harmonizing the style with that of other Wiley publications to facilitate a smoother production process. All submission accepted for publication from October 31, 2016 onwards will be formatted in the new layout. The Editorial Board of JCN is comprised of just under 50 leading experts in the field of neuroscience, who typically serve one or two four-year terms. The role of the Board members is to act as advisors to the Editors, and ambassadors for the journal in the community. Indeed, the Board is often a source of ideas for Special Issues, and their tireless efforts as reviewers cannot be overstated. Every year the Editors elect new members and may re-appoint some of the previous Board members. In 2016, we had 10 positions reaching the end of their four-year term. It was our pleasure to re-invite Ramón Anadón, Susan Courtney, Suzanne Haber, Uwe Homberg, Leah Krubitzer, Luiz Pessoa, Susan Travers, and David Van Essen to serve for a second term. In addition, we welcome Sue Aicher, Jorge Mpodozis, Linda Richards, and Ruth Stornetta as new members joining us in January 2017. We look forward to their contributions during their service on the Board. We are also grateful to Sonia Garel and Hans-Rudolf Berthoud, who stepped down from the Board at the end of 2016, for their outstanding service to the journal. We hope that they will continue to be advocates of JCN and look forward to working with them in the future, as authors, reviewers, and friends of the journal. As the Editor-in-Chief, I have the opportunity to award annual prizes to leading researchers in the field in the form of the W. Maxwell Cowan and Sanford L. Palay Awards. At the Cajal Club Social during the Society for Neuroscience Meeting in San Diego, I had the honor of presenting the 2016 Sanford L. Palay Award in Structural Neuroscience to two of my mentors, Dr. Floyd E. Bloom, from the Scripps Research Institute, and Dr. John H. Morrison, from The University of California, Davis, for their outstanding contributions to our understanding of synaptic function in health and disease. These awards were presented on the behalf of the journal and our publisher, John Wiley & Sons. This Editorial also affords me the opportunity, as the Editor-in-Chief, to acknowledge the outstanding work of the nine Associate Editors and Editor Emeritus, for their scholarly dedication and handling of the manuscripts that the journal receives throughout the year. Thanks also go to our new Publisher at Wiley, Dr. Natalia Ortuzar, who joined us in spring 2016. Natalia has a background in medicinal chemistry and is the former Editor-in-Chief of ChemMedChem, and with over 8 years’ experience in publishing, she will no doubt prove to be a valuable partner in managing, promoting, and improving JCN. We give our deepest appreciation to Dr. Serena Tan, our former Managing Editor, who left the journal to pursue new responsibilities at Wiley. She has been replaced by Erica Byrd who expertly handles contributions to the journal and the logistics of our Special Issues, working closely with our authors and the production team, in addition to other duties, such as updating the antibody database. She is helped by Jonathan Serra, our Editorial Assistant, who efficiently ensures that everything runs smoothly with the journal's day-to-day operations. Finally, it is my pleasure to extend my gratitude to the many colleagues, listed below, who participated in the peer-review process of manuscripts for the journal in 2016. As always, our journal can maintain the high standards of quality that make its reputation only through their outstanding dedication, scholarly integrity, and timeliness. Patrick R.
