ResumoOn the basis of the theoretical reference of the economy of crime, this article scopes to reveal and analyze the opinion of 165 detainees sentenced to detention establishments in Paraná State (Brazil), focused on the 18 to 23 year age group (closest to juvenile delinquents), concerning the lowering of the majority penal age.In this current context, the rational choice of the criminal agents were analyzed about eventual consequences of the Law Bill PEC 171/1993, which proposes to reduce the majority penal age of 18 to 16 in the case of serious criminal offenses. In view of the results, the opinions of the paranaenses detainees concerning the lowering of the majority penal age were divided: 55.8% were against and 43,6% were in favor (0,6% choose not to manifest). However, in highlighting the opinion of male and female detainees the results and reasons were divergent.Considering that 68,9% of the males researched were against the reduction of the majority penal age, the rational choice of the male detainees in regard to eventual consequences of the Law Bill PEC 171/1993 are attributed to the pressure placed on the current economical and physical structures of the already precarious correctional centers (prisons), derived from a physical and social educational perspective. The 66,1% of the woman researched, in view of the seriousness of heinous crimes, emphasizing rape, motivated the choice in favor of the PEC 171/1993.
