ResumoThe Passages editorial represents an opportunity to reflect on changes and transitions, as well as on developments and innovation. Since early 2014, the Journal of Comparative Neurology (JCN) has participated in the Resource Identification Initiative (RII) whose goal is to standardize citations of key resources such as antibodies, model organisms, software tools, and databases to increase their identification, discovery, accessibility, and reuse towards the overarching goal of improving research reproducibility. Serena Tan, the Journal's Managing Editor, coordinated this effort. In line with the Journal's long-standing emphasis on specificity of antibody reporting, its participation in the RII over the past year has proven to be a highly successful endeavor. We have asked our contributors to aid us in this effort by using Research Resource Identifiers (RRIDs), machine-readable, standardized, and easily generated identifiers of research tools, to cite the resources they used in their research. We are extremely pleased to report that JCN authors demonstrated over 90% compliance — amongst the highest of all participating journals — in the reporting and identification of the resources used in their studies. The full results of this experiment are published in this issue of JCN (Bandrowski et al., 2016). This paper will also be co-published by several other journals that have participated in the pilot study. We continued our efforts to publish special issues to increase the visibility of the Journal and are currently producing a number of them that stemmed from conferences that were in part supported by JCN and our publisher, John Wiley & Sons, or were initiated by the particular scientific interests of members of our community. We are pleased to announce that two special issues are currently in production and will soon be released. One is a collection of papers from a meeting on “Circuits for Positive Emotions” held in the Fall of 2014 in Ascona, Switzerland, organized by Dr. Marco Celio from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and one of our Associate Editors, Dr. Gert Holstege. The other was edited by Dr. Veronica Martinez-Cerdeño, from University of California, Davis, who organized in May 2015 a conference on cortical evolution in Toledo, Spain. Two other special issues are currently in progress and are expected to appear in the second half of 2016. One will be devoted to the functional anatomy of the vertebrate retina and is graciously spearheaded by one of our Editorial Board's recent members, Dr. Andrew Huberman from the University of California, San Diego. The other focuses on the anatomy, connectivity, evolution, and possible functions of the claustrum and is organized by Dr. David Reser (Monash University, Australia), who recently initiated an international interest group on the claustrum, and Dr. Joan Baizer (University at Buffalo). We greatly appreciate the contributions and dedication of our colleagues in editing these special issues and are looking forward to seeing them in print. The journal is encouraging submission of special publications, such as scholarly topical reviews and toolbox papers. The latter are meant to report significant development of novel technologies while taking into consideration the functional anatomy of the brain, by placing the methodological aspects of the work into a clear biological context. In this issue we are proud to feature one such publication from the research group led by Dr. Pierre Magistretti at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. He and his colleagues have developed a revolutionary cave automatic virtual environment (usually referred to as CAVE) system to allow an observer literally to navigate within the 3-dimensional environment, structurally accurate at the highest level of spatial resolution, of a single axon terminal or dendritic spine, to conduct quantitative studies (Cali, et al., 2016). The publication of this remarkable achievement in JCN reflects the continued involvement of our journal in promoting outstanding methodologies and technological novelty in the study of the functional anatomy and pathology of the nervous system. JCN is also known for its longevity and the wealth of historical content offered in its back issues. As such we periodically pay attention to the history of neuroscience. Last year we had opportunities to review the work of past neuroscientists whose contributions significantly influenced our understanding of brain function. On the occasion of a translation of his 1872 paper of the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid, we published an editorial on Heinrich Quincke's discoveries and insights that today find their reflection in the increasing interest in the brain “glymphatic” system. In addition, Dr. Luiz Pessoa, a Member of our Editorial Board, and myself edited a translation of Paul Broca's 1878 classic “Le grand lobe limbique et la scissure limbique dans la série des mammifères” (The great limbic lobe and the limbic fissure in the mammalian series), of which a full English version was not available. We take this opportunity to commend Ms. Donna Furlani, our translator, for an outstanding rendering in English of the frequently complex prosodic structure of Broca's French text. As always, we are deeply appreciative of the outstanding work of our 10 Associate Editors and our Editor Emeritus, for their expertise and efficient handling of the manuscripts that we receive week after week, and of our Publishing Editor at Wiley, Matthew Giampoala, for his constant efforts managing, promoting, and improving our journal. Serena Tan, our Managing Editor, while embracing new responsibilities at Wiley continues to handle the production of our papers and the organization of special issues, working closely with our authors and our production team, representing the journal at conferences, and updating the antibody database. We also welcome our new Editorial Manager, Mr. Jonathan Serra who is expertly handling the flow of submissions and ensures that everything runs in a timely fashion. Every year the Editors elect new members or re-appoint some of the previous Board members. In 2015 we had 10 positions reaching their 4-year terms. It was our pleasure to re-invite Hollis Cline, Jean-Marc Fritschy, Jon Kaas, Harvey Karten, Robert Marc, Elliot Mufson, Reinhard Stocker, David Vaney, and Mario Wulliman for another term. We welcome Claudia Distler, Sten Grillner, Lee Martin, Alex McDonald, Zoltan Molnar, and Robert Morecraft as new members in 2016 and look forward to their contributions during their service on the Board. We also thank Glenn Northcutt, Joseph Price, Edwin Rubel, Yoland Smith, John Trojanowski, and Daniel Zahm for their outstanding service to the journal and hope that they may join us again in the future. We deeply regret that Leslie Ungerleider, one of our Associate Editors, resigned from her position owing to personal circumstances. She will continue to work with our team as a Member of the Editorial Board. I am actively working with Leslie to recruit a new Associate Editor with expertise in brain imaging. I also want to mention that at the Cajal Club Social during the Society for Neuroscience Meeting in Chicago, I had the great pleasure to honor Dr. Mary Beth Hatten, from the Rockefeller University, as a recipient of the W. Maxwell Cowan Award in Developmental Neuroscience. I presented her this award on the behalf of our publisher, John Wiley & Sons, and of JCN, for her outstanding contribution to developmental neuroscience. Finally, we extend our gratitude to our many colleagues who have participated in the peer-review process of manuscripts for the journal in 2015. As always, our journal can maintain the high standards of quality that make its reputation only through their remarkable dedication, expertise, and timeliness. Patrick R.
