The mounting systems for auxiliary systems used in the design of motor vehicles have to fulfil a number of functions — some of which are contradictory. The design of such interface components thus calls for a lot of know-how along with a high level of co-operation among the firms involved. This article explains the technical background behind the interface problem, and describes the simultaneous engineering of an exhaust hanger system used for a new Volkswagen corporate platform (also found in Audi A3 and VW Touran). The firms involved in developing the concept were Volkswagen AG, Woco AVS GmbH, and the manufacturers of exhaust systems and decoupling elements.
