ResumoToday's worries about the stratospheric ozone layer date from 1985 when Joe Farman and colleagues from the British Antarctic Survey discovered that the total ozone content of the atmosphere during Antarctic spring had decreased markedly since 1979. Although this "ozone hole" was observed only over Antarctica during Austral spring (September to early November), the phenomenon was so remarkable and unprecedented as to attract the attention of both the scientific community and the general public.
