ResumoBariatric surgery first stemmed from the observation that upper gastrointestinal surgery for cancer inevitably leads to weight loss. The pioneers of bariatric surgery modified oncologic surgeries to mimic a side effect: weight loss maintenance. The 2 surgical disciplines have now separated, and consequently a generation of bariatric surgeons only have limited exposure to upper gastrointestinal surgery for treatment of cancer and vice versa. The aim of this letter is to discuss how the 2 subspecialities might identify common challenges and work more closely with each other in the future to improve surgical training and outcomes for patients.
